How to Age Well

Many people have the idea that older people lead a sedentary live. This need not be so. A research conducted by the University of California at Los Angeles showed that becoming physically active increases walking levels thus maintaining health and well-being. Participants of the study were asked to discard the notion that sedentary life comes with old age and that they should continue to be physically active into their old age.

There are many books in the market about Aging and the do's and don'ts and so forth. This book, "The Science of Staying Young" advises having spontaneous physical fun including continuing to enjoy dark chocolate, wine, working in the garden or even go dancing. Besides providing spontaneous fun, they enable seniors to stay physically active at the same time.

The authors of the book, Dr. John Morley, director of geriatric medicine at St. Louis University, and Sheri Colberg, a professor of exercise science at Old Dominion University, suggest the following to stay healthful to be able to enjoy life in one's golden years:

-- Strive for four servings of fish a week. Enjoy moderate amounts of alcohol -- a drink for women and at most two for men, a day. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.

-- Aim for physical exercise for a half hour every day and exercise the brain to keep the mind sharp.

-- Use hormone replacement therapy judiciously.

-- Give up smoking, have blood pressure checked and take prescribed medicine.

-- Take up tai chi to improve balance.
