Many of us are familiar with the USDA's Food Guide Pyramid, but for a healthy diabetic diet, the pyramid requires a little modification.

Enter the Diabetes Food Pyramid. This nutritional aid is divided into six groups and is based on foods' carbohydrate and protein content for those leading a diabetic lifestyle. Grains and starches are at the bottom of the pyramid, from which we garner the most servings of these each day; fats and sweets are at the top – a place where most diabetics know to avoid.

So within the six groups, what are the 10 best foods to add to a diabetic’s grocery list? Here’s a hint: good carbs, proteins, fiber-rich foods and even natural sugars are going in the cart.

10. Fruit
9. Meats (or Meat Substitutes)
8. Vegetables
7. Canola Oil
6. Legumes and Nuts
5. Low-fat Dairy
4. Garlic, Onion and Fenugreek
3. Fish
2. Whole Grains
1. Starchy Vegetables
