Did you watch the Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony yesterday? China gets to host the Olympics this time around and the date chosen for the Opening Ceremony is one that is auspicious. It was held on August 8 and written in numerals, the date would read 888 or 080808. Because it was synchronised to start at 8pm, another 8 or 08 could be added to the string of 8s.
In the Chinese culture and tradition, the number eight is synonymous with prosperity, thus the choice of timing the opening ceremony and start of the event on a prosperous note.
Along this line, there were many weddings on this date here in our society. Even the non-Chinese have joined in the belief. I attended a wedding and the bride is a good friend. I went shopping a week before for a gold chain. I wanted her to have something she could have for keeps from this old friend.
